"Turning on Each Other" was the eighteenth episode of chronological re-cut of Arrested Development's fourth season. It premiered on Netflix on May 4, 2018.

Tobias stands in the way of Lucille's freedom, Michael discovers a revealing clue about Rebel's boyfriend. G.O.B. has a heart-to-heart with Tony Wonder.

Synopsis[]

At Austerity, Tobias begins to work as Lucille's therapist. She tries to bribe him to sign her out early but he insists that she attends the therapy sessions. Lucille refuses to speak with him so Tobias continues to work on his Fantastic Four musical during these sessions. Argyle suggests that the musical needs a villian and when Tobias describes this to Lucille, she thinks he is talking about her and accepts that she has been a villian. Tobias corrects her and, when Lucille finds out that the performance will take place on a boat she can escape on, she accepts the role.

Meanwhile, Michael attempts to surprise Rebel but she isn't home. He talks to her son in order to find out about her other boyfriend. Lem says he looks like Michael and Michael finds a dove with a tag saying "Love Each Other" on it as well as a rose from George Maharis.

Back at Austerity, Oscar rings Lucille although he was actually trying to ring Lucille 2. He pretends to be George and she tells him that they're going to leave the country at Cinco de Cuatro. She is also planning to give photos of Herbert Love with a prostitute, actually Lindsay, to Herbert's wife Ophelia to make sure that he does whatever they want regarding the border wall. Michael arrives and Lucille wants him to be suspicious of G.O.B. because she doesn't like it when they get on. Michael is there to get Lucille's signature for the movie while Lucille also wants him to sign away his connection to the family business. During the conversation, Lucille finds out that it is Lindsay in the photos and Michael starts to suspect that George Maharis is really G.O.B. The dove at Rebel's apartment and Tobias telling him that G.O.B. is dating a celebrity makes Michael even more suspicious. Lucille suggests he use Gene Parmesan to find out the truth.

G.O.B. is, in fact, dating Tony Wonder although it initially began as a plan to break Tony's heart because G.O.B. believes that he locked him in an illusion. Tony is also dating Sally Sitwell and is hoping to get the $100,000 back that she stole from Lucille 2 to fund his career. His plan is to get the phone number of George Michael, who he thinks is G.O.B.'s boyfriend, so he can hack the Fakeblock and make billions. They agreed to meet at The Little Ballroom although G.O.B. accidentally goes to My Little Ballroom, a children's play area instead. Michael follows him there, accompanied by Gene Parmesan.

Inside My Little Ballroom, Michael confronts G.O.B. about Rebel but G.O.B. genuinely hasn't been dating her. The dove Michael found was from G.O.B. but a year ago, when he was partying with Mark Cherry's entourage and showed her a dove illusion. It has been in Rebel's fridge ever since. Michael fights G.O.B. but they eventually get tired and Michael ends up believing G.O.B. He also finds out that G.O.B. sold all the model homes to sex offenders so he is now out of the movie.

Later, G.O.B. visits Tony at his house so he can continue to con him, but actually feels bad when he realises that Tony is mad at him. He offers to show Tony his phone to explain but he doesn't want to check, although Tony realises that he does actually want to look at his phone to get George Michael's contact information. G.O.B. explains how Michael is angry at him even though he did everything that he asked by filling the houses. Tony completely understands him and it turns out they have a lot in common, especially saying the word "same". Throughout the evening, they both see ways to sabotage each other but decide not to take them. Tony thinks they should take their relationship slowly and G.O.B. agrees. They admit that they have feelings for each other and decide to sleep together on Cinco de Cuatro.

On the next Arrested Development: Fateful Consequences... Michael visits Lucille again and tells her that she's out of the movie for making him think that G.O.B. was dating Rebel. He also talks to George Sr. on the phone and kicks him out of the movie because he suggested hiring G.O.B. to fill the model homes.

Callbacks/Running Jokes[]

  • Balls in the Air - This song plays over the scene of G.O.B. and Michael fighting in the ballpit.
  • Contradicting the narrator - The narrator states that G.O.B. and Tony's feelings are friendship and they will now want to avoid making any specific commitments, but is interrupted before he can finish by the two of them committing to a specific date to have sex. The running joke of the narrator being interrupted by a comment that contradicts him also occurs with Lindsay in "The Weak Become the Strong" and Maeby in "Cinco de Cuatro I".
  • Gangie - Lucille is upset that one of the guards compares her to Gangie (a monster from the fictional horror movie that Maeby had produced called "Gangie"). The irony of this situation is that the monster is actually based on a picture Maeby took of Lucille after undergoing a face-lift years earlier.
  • Gene Parmesan - Lucille screams on being surprised by Gene, whose entire disguise consists of the letters "ARY" being taped over his "GENE" name badge to make it "GARY".
  • I don't know what I expected - Michael finds a dead dove in a bag labeled "Dove (bar) do not eat", just as he did in "Top Banana", and says, "I probably should have expected that."
  • John Beard's shows - John Beard appears in yet another TV show, John Beard's To Entrap a Local Predator: Orange County Edition: Super Creep.
  • Klimpy's Express - Tobias brings a bag of food from the fast food restaurant to the model home.
  • Love Each Other - The message is taped onto the feet of one of G.O.B.'s dead doves.
  • Michael's bribes: Michael tries to bribe Rebel Alley's son Lem with a Dove bar in order to find out about her other boyfriend. Michael also tried to bribe Marta's son with a piece of cake in "Marta Complex" to find the identity of Hermano.
  • Motion sickness - Gene gets nauseous when he tries to look through binoculars while the car is in motion, just as Buster does in "What Goes Around".
  • Ostrich - During therapy, Lucille mentions she found the body of her pet ostrich under her mother's porch.
  • You're out of the movie - Michael tells G.O.B., Lucille, and George Sr. that they're "out of the movie."

Hidden/Background Jokes[]

  • Chicken Dan's - Gene Parmesan works a second job at this restaurant, which sounds a lot like "chicken dance." Michael tells him that Chicken Dan's is embarrassing (the chicken dance is embarrassing, which is true of both the dance at weddings and the bad chicken impressions that the Bluths do).
  • Lucille's Number - Lucille's prison number is 07734 - which is "hello" spelled backwards in "numeric" form.
  • Tobias' West Side Story Reference - "It would be like having a play with all Sharks and no Jets". David Cross' father in law is Russ Tamblyn who played Riff- leader of the Jets in the 1961 movie.
  • G.O.B.'s ad inviting sex offenders to move to Sudden Valley names him as President of the GOB Bee Company as well as Vice President of the Michael B. Company.
  • When G.O.B. runs at Michael and shoves him through the wall of the My Little Ballroom they crash through a sign that says "No Rough Play, No Running, No Hitting".
  • The name of the knife store that Michael and G.O.B. crash through the wall of is called "Thin Wally's Knives".

Foreshadowing/Future References[]

  • Sex offenders - G.O.B. fills Sudden Valley with sex offenders, which concludes in "Fast Company".
  • Sally has alopecia - During the scene where Sally and Tony discuss their schemes, it's revealed that Sally had never shaved her own legs and has a false eyebrow hinting at the possibility that she has alopecia like her father.

      • Michael: Hi, Mom.
      • Lucille: (into phone) Hold on. Michael. What happened to your eye?

Notes[]

  • Lindsay, Maeby, and Buster aren't in this episode.
  • The title of this story "Turning on Each Other" is both a reference to Michael and G.O.B. starting to fight again and G.O.B. and Tony Wonder starting to seduce each other.
